What makes these Sour Patch Kids so eXtreme?
I’ll start off by saying I really enjoyed Sour Patch Kids Extreme. They are essentially the sequel to normal Sour Patch Kids normal– let me explain. With any Hollywood sequel, the movie essentially just tries to recreate a lot of the magic of the first film. However, they’ve been given a bigger budget, so often the sequel is just a louder, bigger, retread of the first. That is the case here. Unfortunately, Sour Patch Kids Extreme aren’t bigger or any different really; they are just a tad bit more sour. Coming this summer…Sour Patch Kids…Extreme! (24% on Rotten Tomatoes)
What makes these candies difficult to love is that they offer no real upgrade to the standard Sour Patch Kids. While they are definitely more tart, they are probably less sour than advertised. They are definitely a step-up, but not anything near Warhead level of sour. For that reason, they essentially become Sour Patch Kids but in new flavors. So whether or not you enjoy them comes down to if you like the flavors or if you’d rather stick to the originals.
Sour Patch Kids Extreme Flavors:
- Sour Blue Raspberry
- Sour Strawberry
- Sour Green Apple
- Sour Orange
I will say however that the Extreme flavors they have chosen are very good. There’s orange again (I don’t know why they insist on keeping that flavor around), Blue Raspberry, Strawberry, and Green Apple. Out of them, I would say that Green Apple is the sourest and therefore my favorite in the pack. I really like the sour Strawberry addition too though. Based on pure flavor it is the most original and best tasting of the bunch. And hey, even the orange one is fine, as it’s a bit sourer this time around.
What’s kind of odd is that the pink of the strawberry and the orange are kind of hard to distinguish between unless you have very good lighting while you eat. And let’s be honest: a lot of us are eating these alone in the dark so no one will know (right?).
The conclusion?
With all these observations, I would definitely eat Sour Patch Kids Extreme again. I can’t go as far as saying they are better than original Sour Patch Kids in general, but they are definitely on to something. By adding another level of sourness (and marketing as such), they attract the sour-lovers like myself but alienate those who may find them scary.
Honestly though, if you can handle the regular ones, you can handle these.
They may not be for everyone, but just as with any sequel, you have to give it a try, especially if you liked the first one a lot. In movie terms, these candies somewhere above Avengers 2 bad but definitely below Bad Boys 2 great. Is that fair?
