Lagavulin is undeniably one of the most famous Scottish distillers in the world, and it’s located on South Islay Island. Founded in 1816, it eventually climbed up the ladder to reach the Diageo portfolio among the six whiskies that made up the classic malts of the Scottish series.

How Is It Made?

The Lagavulin distillate is formed using peat-smoked malt, and this is what gives the signature reek to most of its products. Apart from using the peat-smoked barley, the distillers also ferment it for a good 55 hours and make sure that it goes through a gradual secondary distillation process to get the unique Lagavulin flavour.

The distillery’s flagship expression is nonetheless the Lagavulin 16-year-old, which has also been regarded as one of the best single malts across the world. However, Lagavulin has much more to offer with its recent addition of the 8-year-old expression. It was released on the 200th anniversary of the distillery and managed to stick around for a year. Tasting Notes

Colour: Dusky and deep amber

Nose: There’s undoubtedly a reek of peat, laced with salty rocks, driftwood, and smoked fish. Once this cover is removed, all you will taste is sweet malt, cobbler crust, and baked apples.

There’s also some industrial character to it with a hint of rubber and hot equipment.

Palate: When you have the first sip, you feel a taste of powdery ashes, but soon there’s a lush garden.

The Lagavulin 16-year-old tastes like salty nets and varnish on an old boat, but soon you get down to its layers and experience a fruity emergence that lets you have a taste of red cherry and orange.

What Is the Takeaway?

You may not find it to be the best one out there just by having it once. It takes a lot of time to develop a taste for it, but once you do, there’s nothing else like it. It is satisfying but not in ways other whiskies work. It will not pretend to be all you’ve ever wanted. Instead, it will be the opposite of that, and it will have you go through a brand new experience, different than what any other whisky has ever offered.
