Concrete

You don’t need to understand rocket science to know that we are living in the concrete age. It’s one of the most common things because most buildings are made of concrete. Well, there is something beyond.

Most of us have no idea about concrete mixes. If you are one of them, we will help you understand the details. That’s why we will share the type and classification of concrete in this article.

Moreover, we will also share the classification based on density and purpose. Make sure you read each point to understand the details. So, let’s get started.

Types and Classification of Concrete

Before you know about the classification, you have understood that there are different terms in concrete technology. The professionals use these terms to have a better understanding. Let’s find out the types and classification of concrete below:

  1. Ordinary

The ordinary mix is the most common in the market. Ordinary or plain concrete is mostly used for buildings and pavements. In simple words, you can’t use it for high strength.

  1. Lightweight

If the concrete has a density lower than 1920 Kg/m3, it will be classed as lightweight one. You can’t use this mix for heavy constructions. Plus, it has low thermal conductivity.

  1. High Density

High-density concrete mix is ideal for heavy constructions. This one is mostly used for atomic power plants. However, you don’t need to use this mix for domestic constructions.

  1. Reinforced

Reinforced Cement Concrete has steel in various forms and can give high tensile strength. That’s why you can use it for several purposes. In simple words, RCC is an important concrete type.

  1. Air Entrained

Air entrained concrete is one of the most unique types. That’s why it can be used for special purposes. This type of concrete is good with scaling and abrasion.

  1. High Strength

As the name suggests, High-performance concrete or high-strength concrete is ideal for heavy construction. This type of mix also has high fire resistance and can be used for several things.

  1. Pumped

Pumped concrete is mostly used for high-rise buildings where pumping isn’t an easy task. It is made with fine materials that provide a better supply. Plus, pumped concrete is very flexible to use.

  1. Permeable

Permeable concrete is made with a special purpose, so water can be passed into it. That’s why civil engineers use this mix for a place that receives stormwater. Good for both domestic and commercial constructions.

  1. Polymer

It’s an uncommon concrete mix where there will be polymerization. The manufacturers use this technique to increase the strength of the concrete. Plus, there are four types of polymer concrete available in the market.

  1. Ferro Cement

Ferro cement has a rich mix and is made with the finest materials. Italian architect P. L. Nervi developed this concrete in 1940. The best thing is it can be used for various purposes.

Classification of Concrete by Density

There are some types of concrete that are classified by density. Well, these terms are mostly used by civil engineers. In the following list, we are sharing the classification of concrete by density:

  1. C10 Concrete

Without any doubt, C10 is a very popular mix. It can be used for both domestic and commercial construction. In most cases, C10 is used for non-structural construction such as pathways and patio slabs.

  1. C15 Concrete

C15 concrete’s strength is higher than C10. And you can use it for minimal domestic constructions like floor binding or similar constructions. However, this one isn’t as popular as the C15 concrete mix.

  1. C20 Concrete

C2O has medium strength compared to other lightweight concrete mixes. That’s why you can apply C20 for both domestic and commercial purposes. In most cases, the C20 mix is applied for garage or domestic workshop bases.

  1. C25 Concrete

Well, C25 is popular for multi-purpose use. So, you can use this one for heavy-weight things. Ideally, most civil engineers suggest using C25 slab foundations, bungalow floors, and commercial pathways.

  1. C30 Concrete

C30 is a strong mix and can be used for many things. If you want to apply C30 for pathways or yards, it can be an ideal match for heavy vehicles. On the other hand, C30 can resist heavy weathering and climate change.

  1. C35 Concrete

C35 is a strong and heavy mix ideal for commercial structures. In most cases, this mix is used for creating external slabs, walls, and structural pilling. You can also apply this mix for domestic uses.

  1. C40 Concrete

With its heavy density, C40 is the strongest concrete mix in this industry. Most of the time, C40 can be used for creating foundations for roads and beams. Plus, it can be used in harsh environments.

Classification of Concrete by Purpose

In some cases, you can get concrete that is made for specific purposes. That’s why most civil engineers use them for special things. Let’s find out about the classification of concrete by purpose:

  • Ready Mix Concrete

One of the most common concrete types in the market. In most cases, this ready-mix concrete can be used for several domestic and commercial purposes. There’s no extra treatment required.

  • Prestressed Concrete

Prestressed is a special type of reinforced concrete. However, it can be used for heavy construction. There’s no risk of cracks when you use this concrete mix.

  • Fiber Reinforced Concrete

Fiber Reinforced Concrete is another top-rated concrete that is used for heavy construction purposes. It has tensile strength and is very flexible to use. However, you have to take special care while using it.

  • Pre-Packed Concrete

Pre-packed concrete can be used for special purposes. This comes in the form of a prepared mix. Plus, it is also good for heavy construction.

Finally, you know the common type of concrete mixes and their strengths. If you are looking for top-quality concrete, make sure you discuss it with the seller. On the other hand, you can also do some research or get help from an expert.
