The H.B. Reese Candy Company
Year: 1982

In 1928, The H.B. Reese Candy Company was established in the basement of Reese’s home in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

In 1930,Mars introduced Snickers, named after the favorite horse of the Mars family. The Snickers chocolate bar consists of nougat, peanuts, and caramel with a chocolate coating.

The product was first produced in the United Kingdom in 1967, and introduced in the United States in 1979. Twix was called Raider in mainland Europe for many years before its name was changed in 1991 (2000 in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Turkey) to match the international brand name.

Kit Kat
Year: 1911

The origins of what is now known as the Kit Kat brand go back to 1911, when Rowntree’s, a confectionery company based in York in the United Kingdom, trademarked the terms Kit Cat and Kit Kat. The names were not used immediately and Kit Kat first appeared in the 1920s, when Rowntree’s launched a brand of boxed chocolates entitled Kit Cat. This continued into the 1930s, when Rowntree’s shifted focus and production onto its Black Magic and Dairy Box brands. With the promotion of alternative products the Kit Cat brand decreased and was eventually discontinued.

Production began in 1941 in a factory located at 285 Badger Avenue in Clinton Hill, Newark, New Jersey. When the company was founded it was M&M Limited. The two “Ms” represent the names of Forrest E. Mars Sr., the founder of Newark Company, and Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey Chocolate’s president William F. R. Murrie, who had a 20 percent share in the product. The arrangement allowed the candies to be made with Hershey chocolate, as Hershey had control of the rationed chocolate at the time.

Angelo Fraggos launched the production of Nerds in 1983. By 1985, Nerds were recognized as “Candy of the Year” by the National Candy Wholesalers Association (NCWA). The United Kingdom sold a three-box chambered package of Nerds, with strawberry cola as one of the flavors. Throughout the years, the product has been sold in a box with compartments, each compartment containing a different flavor.

The Curtiss Candy Company was founded near Chicago, Illinois, in 1922 by Otto Schnering, using his mother’s maiden name. He invented the Butterfinger candy bar in 1923. The company held a public contest to choose the name of this candy.

Sour Patch Kids were originally created by Frank Galatolie of Jaret International, under the name of Mars Men. In the late-1970s Cadbury and the Malaco Licorice Company of Sweden formed the Allen Candy Company in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to produce them. In 1985, they were renamed to Sour Patch Kids, likely to capitalize on the popularity of Cabbage Patch Kids
