Here’s a quick round-up of a bunch of Hi-Chews that I got as free samples from Tsunami.hk. If you’re not familiar with Hi-Chews, they’re like Asian Starbursts, only chewier and more genuinely flavorful. Canned Peach is an unusual flavor for any candy. I think the Jr. part of the wrapper refers to the fact that [...]

These soda flavored Morinaga Hi-Chews came as free samples from Tsunami.hk. Look at the lovely effervescence on those wrappers! They came in three flavors: lemon soda, cola, and white soda. If you’ve never had them before, Hi-Chews are individually wrapped, rectangularly shaped chews that are usually fruit flavored. Their chew is bouncy and mostly not [...]

Via my friend Nana (of generous international candy gifting fame), a BBC story about a US/UK chocolate divide and potential British resistance to a Hershey’s takeover of Cadbury. The NY Times’s take can be found here. And via Chocolate Bytes, news that Mars is suing Hershey’s. The claim is that Hershey’s Bliss ads are a [...]

I’ve never had the pleasure of eating a fresh mango in tropical Asia, but I can imagine just how scrumptious they could be. According to this article in Gourmet magazine, I don’t have to imagine. I just need to track down some mango Hi-Chews, which are better than the real thing. I admit that I’ve [...]

Hooray for globetrotting friends! My friends Nana and Justin recently finished up a three year stint teaching English in Korea (next stop for them: Scotland). Before they left Korea, they were kind enough to buy and mail me a bunch of Korean candy for the blog. Thanks for the help, as always, Nana and Justin! [...]

You can probably guess that today’s review is not of an American candy. American companies may give their products weird names to make them memorable, but they’d never go for something as unpronounceable as Qra Qra. Asian companies selling in the U.S., however, totally would. I love the packaging on this product because a) it [...]

Starburst Choozers are “fruit flavoured chews with liquid centre made with real fruit juices.” Did you catch those UK spellings? Yup – these guys are, at least for now, only available abroad. My pack had 10 Choozers unevenly distributed amongst 3 flavors: 6 pineapple & orange, 3 orange & mango, and 1 raspberry & orange. [...]

Chow’s regular feature, The Ten, recently profiled 10 Japanese sweets. I’ve had all but numbers 2 and 10, thanks to my Chinese family’s frequenting of Asian grocery stores. Personally, I think there are Hi-Chew flavors out there that are better than the grape (like pineapple!), but they are right in that the grape Hi-Chew is [...]

Another Asian treat sent as a free review sample by Asian Food Grocer. I was given free reign to pick what I wanted. In addition to pineapple Hi-Chew, I asked for Flower’s Kiss Candy because I was intrigued by the name. Would the Flower’s Kiss Candy taste like flowers? Thankfully, nope. The Flower’s Kiss Candy [...]

In addition to a bag of Crunch Ball Crispy Candy, Nana and Justin also mailed me a nice assortment of Hi-Chew candies in strawberry, grape, and green apple. They were so good that when Asian Food Grocer, an online retailer of Asian food, snacks, and candies contacted me with an offer to send me my [...]
