This post about sweets featured in children’s books on The Kitchn caught my eye. They talked up Harry Potter, the Little House books, the Chronicles of Narnia, and, of course, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Those are all good ones, but they left out one of my favorites – Brian Jacques’s Redwall series! That man could really whip up some amazing food descriptions: candied chestnuts, skilly ‘n’ duff, deeper ‘n’ ever turnip ‘n’ tater ‘n’ beetroot pie (okay, that one’s not a sweet. But doesn’t it sound delicious?). He?even inspired a cookbook.
What are your favorite children’s books’ treats?
Rosa, you’ve managed to spark my nostalgic imagination today! Food — and sweets in particular — have always been a driving force behind my love for a book. To this day, I’m drawn to books with pictures of food on the cover. It’s why my bookshelf is lined with things like The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake and The Sugar Queen. Here are my favorite children’s book treats:
– Snow candy from Little House in the Big Woods
– Scrumdiddlyumptious from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
– Butterscotch Krimpets from Maniac Magee
– Lollipops from Many Luscious Lollipops (an adjective book)
– The marshmallow marsh from Jamberry
– Cocoa and doughnuts from Betsy~Tacy
I could go on. 😉
Snow candy holds a special place in my memory! I went to a maple syrup festival this spring and was disappointed when none of my friends got “hurry girls! The syrup’s graining!”
